Our new chapter

I am officially at 38 weeks of pregnancy today. In another 2 weeks (or earlier) Mr. Moon and I are going to start a new chapter after 4 years of marriage. We are expecting Moon Junior to arrive in the first week of December 2011! :)

How do I feel now? Both ecstatic and nervous of course.. ecstatic because I'll be seeing my baby for the first time very soon...nervous because I have never experienced giving birth before and I hope it 'll be a smooth and safe one. Most importantly, I hope baby will arrive 'safe and healthy'.

The first few months of my pregnancy was not a smooth sailing one though. I had very severe morning sickness..or I would call it 'whole day' sickness, feeling nauseous, lost my appetite for practically every food that was put on the table, vomiting out every single bite of food that I forced myself to swallow, lost weight till the end of the 4th month and even got myself hospitalized due to dehydration!I was put on drips for 2 nights!

And don't get me started on sleepless nights, backaches, dizziness etc..hehehe..

Now when I look back, I am so thankful that my Mom was there to take care of me, to help me get through, feeding me with nutritious soup, home cooked food and all things a Mom would do for her child!

THANK YOU MAMA! I'm going to be a mother myself soon and I aspire to be like my Mom. How can someone be so selfless, and make time to do sooooo much for her child!!???

I wonder what kind of parents, Mr. Moon and I would be.....hmmmm...??? I really have no idea now.. we'll see yeah...haha...

PURINA One 'Picture of Health' Contest

Mr. Moon and I received an email from PURINA 2 months ago which was all about the Purina One 'Picture of Health' contest. Lil' Pepper has always been a fan of PURINA pet food. I have been feeding her Purina since she was 9 months old, starting her on PURINA Pro Plan for puppies, then switching her to Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blend and finally PURINA One Smart Blend ( for convenience sake because this can be bought from off the shelves at the nearest hyperrmarket)

Since we already have a pack of PURINA One at home, we did not want to miss having a chance to win cool amazing cash prizes and goodies. Well, there's nothing to lose right? I then submitted Pepper's photos that could possibly depict the 6 signs of a healthy dog as required.

This is not Lil' Pepper's first photo contest. She actually won twice before this, both times getting her photo featured in The Star and winning herself some petcare goodies. :)

One fine day last week, we received a call from PURINA, with the news that Lil Pepper had won consolation prize! She was one of the lucky 20 consolation prize winners chosen out of more than 200 submissions!Yay !!!

We were invited to the prize giving ceremony cum hi-tea at Fitou in Desa Park City, where they would also reveal the top three finalist . It was also a session to meet Angel Wong Chui Ling and her pooch Fatty, both the ambassadors of the brand.

I bumped into Eng Hui a.k.a. Val there. Both of us are expecting very very SOON!

After the panel of judges had a final examination on the top three dogs up close and personal, the winners were finally announced.

and the Grand Prize of RM 10,000 went to this Border Collie. The owner/master was so esctatic he was lost for words when interviewed. I would too if I were to win this amount of CASH! Look at him kissing his doggie!!!

SweetPepperLove is still alive!

This is my first blog entry after I stopped blogging abruptly since I started my new job more than 9 months ago. My new job has been a rollercoaster of new experiences, continuous learning and of course many trials and errors in between.
One of my greatest joys (so far ..) was being able to get a 'free makeover' done by my colleague when I sat in as a 'model' to practise on before a major presentation, which I was also involved in but dealing with different areas. Great opportunity to get my make-up properly done before my own presentation .

It's MY Day!

As 16th of September of 2010 was a public holiday, I decided to ask my friends out for a drink on my birthday! It was such a great feeling going out on a weekday night knowing that I won't need to wake up early in the morning to prepare myself for work.

Since Mr. Moon had been mentioning about Maya Hotel lately, we decided to go there again but with the company of my high school mates. We headed to their Lobby Lounge which is of a classic contemporary spacious design with purple and orange theme. I did not manage to tale a nice photo of the lounge due to the dim lightings.

Tamago Class

Attended the long awaited Tamago class with my Mom @ Mrs. T at Sushi King, Leisure mall last weekend. It was a great mom-daughter bonding session and we got to learn and take home the Tamago(s) that we managed to cook up during that 2 hours class!

All these ingredients and cooking utensils prepared for you and you only need to pay RM 10 !So so so worth it. Agree?

To make tamago, we'll need to use the above soya sauce to get the right taste.. not your normal chinese soya sauce or kicap maggi please..

The first step: Mix the sugar, soy sauce and hot water with a whisk until you see no sign of sugar. The mixture can then be left to cool on ice cubes.

12 fresh looking eggs. The chef who demo-ed shared that the lighter the colour of the yolk, the fresher the egg is and vice versa..

The eggs have to be whisked until well mixed before adding in the now already cooled down soy sauce mixture.Then, the egg +soysauce mixture can then be strained with a strainer into a container to get a smooth egg mixture.

Now, heat the rectangular pan. By using the chopstick and paper towel, coat the pan with cooking oil

One ladle/scoop of the egg mixture can then be poured into the pan and spreaded over the surface.

Once cooked, fold the cooked egg twice, once toward the centre and then towards the end. And you'll get the first layer done.

Push it upwards to the top of the pan.

Repeat the above steps thrice (from heating the pan to folding).

Remember to to spread the egg mixture under the rolled omelette by slightly tilting the pan.

For the fourth and fifth layer, just fold the egg once towards the end.

Once done, place the tamago on some kitchen towels to absorb excess oil.

The white stuff on the plate is actually grated radish which is a great to eat with tamago. Rojakgal,you should try this!

You can also place cheese,unagi or cheese&unagi after the first layer . But now, you will have to becareful with the folding.

Place the unagi one inch away from the top. Fold the omelette towards the centre and then flip and fold towards the end.

Only cook 4 layers and fold only once starting from the third layer.

Ta daaa! Tamago with cheese& unagi.

You can also use crab stick, by unfolding it, and placing it on alternate layers before folding the omelette. You can also place minced spinach , carrots or any other vegetables too!

Mrs. T was very satisfied and happy with the four Tamago that she made! With so many Tamago blocks(including mine, we had 7), we decided to make sushi and handrolls at night for dinner...

We bought crabsticks, cucumber , tuna...etc

Mr. Moon helped to make these. Gotta give him some credits too. :)

Finally, a candid shot of me and Mrs. T. I was busy attending to some phone calls and she came over to help me with my Tamago.

Mom being Mom, she is always more skillful when it comes to cooking. A little childhood story to share. My mom used to bring me and Mr. J to attend cooking/baking classes when we were little. She would then get us to try out the dishes cooked by the person who demonstrated in front. Back then, students only watched how the dishes were cooked and there were no hands-on.

I guess that is the reason why Mrs. T was super happy and excited that she could perform on the spot while learning! She was so enthusiastic that she even told me that she would be interested to join the next Chawan Mushi class in October!:)

Now for the recipe, courtesy of Sushi King:

Soy Sauce Mixture(A)

Hot water 270 ml

Sugar 28gram

Kikkoman sushi & sashimi soya sauce 15 ml

A big bowl of ice to cool down the mixture or just pop it into the fridge or just wait till it cools down to room temperature

Egg mixture

Egg 12 nos

Soy Sauce mixture(A)

Enough cooking oil

I was alone upstairs waiting for Mr.Moon to be back from work when Ian and Vanessa came knocking on the door. I opened the door and was surprised when they presented me a 'Dog House'. They hand made a dog house out of old cardboard boxes just for Pepper!

Pepper was afraid of the house because it looked foreign to her.

Bernice and Ann came to join us after they finished their dinner.

Pepper's house was too small to fit her but it sure looked like a decent one with the well shaped 'roof'.

It was so sweet of them to spend time and effort in making this for her.

They even wrote a message for Pepper. Notice the spelling error on the left? So cute!

On Cloud 'Nine'

No, I'm definitely not on cloud nine, being married for almost 3 years now. The 'Nine' here signifies our future home at The Nine's @ BK 9.

We were on our way to IOI mall when suddenly Mr. Moon decided to turn in to view our future home for God knows how many nth time this year. We were lucky to bump into one of the staffs there who allowed us to go in as the houses were usually locked during our visits. He was kind enough to wait for us outside even though it was drizzling, just to lock the house after we were done.

Have a break with Green Tea Kit Kat!

My brother, Mr.J, had an amazing discovery in Japan! He bought some chocolates from the convenience store and this was one of the chocolates that he liked the most. Green tea Kit Kat! Do we have this in Malaysia?

He liked it so much that he even got my Mom's friend who recently went to Japan to get MORE for him! And being his sweet little sister, I was offered a courteous one pack to try..

This is how the pack looks like. I can't read Japanese but I reckon the 100 kcal shown on the pack emphasizes that one serving contains 100kcal calorie?

More Jap....... and the word 'calorie' in the website..

This must be a product which sells on low calorie content and caters to people who are watching their diet.

The packing looks like one of those cereal/ granola bar.

Green tea Kit Kat is of course green in colour!

And now the most important thing, the taste of this green coloured chocolate. It doesn't taste like the normal Kit Kat chocolate of course, rather, it tastes like white chocolate minus the milky sweetness with a green tea after- taste. Those who loves green tea ice cream will love this too.

Now, Mr. J if you are reading this, can I have more? : )

Sushi Making at Sushi King

I attended the long awaited Sushi making class at Sushi King Leisure Mall with Rojakgal, RojakMom@ Mdm. Wong, Mr.Moon and Shannen@ SBK last Saturday. With a fee of RM 35 for members and RM 45 for non-members, participants were provided with all the ingredients needed and a lunch bento served at the end of the class.

Class was scheduled early at 9.30 am. 5 of us were seated at one table. In this photo, SBK was nowhere to be seen yet because she was still on the way.

Kanikama (Crabsticks)

Tamago('Egg' in Japanese) slices

Ebikko ( Prawn flavoured fish roe)

Nori (roasted seaweed) in different cuts

18 cm long cut kappa and tamago

Each participant was given a little red bag with a note pad and a pen in it

SBK finally arrived! All of us looked damn excited to start making sushi!

We had to wear caps and gloves to remain hygienic throughout the class.Mr. Moon here was very attentive during the class. He was seen jotting down notes too.

First, we learned some basic Japanese language

and the Japanese terms of each ingredient.

We were also briefed on the difference between KOME-chan and NAGA-chan. KOME is short and fat but NAGA is tall and thin. In order to make sushi, KOME-chan rice has to be used.

The demonstrator, Yvonne showing us how to mix sushi vinegar into the warm cooked sushi rice by slowly spreading out the vinegar with a paddle.

According to her, the amount of vinegar varies with the different types of vinegar bought from the supermarket. She recommended Mizkan Vinegar. We will have to read the instructions on the label to determine the right amount of vinegar to be added in the rice.

After mixing the vinegar into the rice, the rice was then allowed to cool down for 10-15 minutes to absorb the aroma and sweetness of the vinegar.

We were provided with well shaped sushi rice on the table. We'll definitely need to get sushi moulds from 100 Yen or Daiso to be used at home!

Yvonne revealed that Sushi King's rice are all shaped with a special machine which costs like RM 20-30 K. Hand -shaped sushi is more expensive and hence the cheaper price at Sushi King?

This is called Gunkan or Warrior boat sushi. A 7-cut Nori is wrapped around the rice,

before ebikko and/ or tuna are then filled in.

These are Nigiri sushi.Sushi without Nori, just simply rice and its topping. The Tamago here has a 10-cut sushi wrapped in the middle for deco and to hold it nicely on top.

Then we learned how to make Maki. There are two types of Maki, namely Osomaki and Uramaki. This is how we make Uramaki. First spread 6 balls of rice(120g) on a half cut Nori.

Then, overturn the rice. Place the 18cm Tamago, Kappa and Kanikama sticks in the order as shown above.

Roll it nicely with the aid of a mat pre-covered with cling wrap. This is to avoid the rice or seaweed sticking on the mat.

This is how we make Osomaki. Spread 4 balls of rice (80g) on the half cut Nori and place the 18cm Kappa in the middle. Leave an inch of Nori on the outer corners.

Roll it up and shape it nicely by pressing firmly on the mat.

Well shaped Makis should be squarish instead of appearing roundish.

The top of the Uramaki can then be laced with ebikko.

We then learned how to make California temaki. I was too engrossed making my temaki that I did not take photos of Yvonne's demo. As you can see here, Mr.Moon quickly and hungrily gobbled down his temakis.

This is the best shot I could get from my camera. This was Rojakgal's version of temaki with extra mayonaise on top.

We had such an interesting day making sushi. Mr. Moon was happy with his ebikko Gunkan.

Rojakgal was caught not paying attention in class but playing with her pink iPhone.

SBK happily rolling up her maki. She went home early, skipping the temaki class but later she shared that her hubby loved the sushis that she made.

Most of the participants were females with the exception of Mr. Moon and another guy. There were like 15-18 of us including little kids.

Rojakgal and I are planning to join Sushi King's Tamago-making class in August. I am sure it will be as delightful as this one! Can't wait!: )

Pets World 2010

Mr. Moon and I attended Pets World 2010 which is a yearly event held at Mid Valley. The crowd was enormous and some dog-lovers even brought their furkids along to have fun!. I did not bring Lil' Pepper because we went to catch Toy Story 3 before the event and of course dogs are always not allowed in a cinema. I wish one day we can have more pet friendly places in KL, maybe a pet-friendly cinema too.

I love taking pictures with mascots. This has been a childhood thing that still lives in me until today. Mr. Moon knows this so well that he quickly asked me to stand beside this mascot from WISH BONE and snap a picture of us at the entrance.

Look at this cute little creature! It 's a ferret! The owner even sprayed our palms with some antiseptic spray before we were allowed to touch it as to avoid bringing harmful germs back to their home.

This Little Sweet Missy just woke up from her beauty sleep. Hence, the mata sepet look. She's so tiny and mind you, she's already 2 years old!

Dogs in strollers!Furkids nowadays are so pampered that they are given the best of everything, from nutritional premium kibbles, treats, snacks, fashionable clothings worn on their backs to being chauffered around in stylish strollers or prams!

Sometimes when I look at Lil' Pepper, I quietly wish that I could switch my identity with her for one day! Imagine having long naps throughout the day, eating great food, having fun play times and snuggling in between Mr. Moon and I every night! Bliss!!

Okay, back to reality,and yes, this is a real lizard-like creature called Gecko!

Amber Chia was there to host a short pet food talk, I guess she's their spokesperson.Think she's at least 4- 5 months pregnant now. She looks good in -person too.

This is Amber's Poodle. I was trying hard to get him to look at the camera but he was too busy looking at some female dogs.

A few animal shelters, namely SPCA, PAWS, MalaysianDogsDeserve Better were there to educate the public on the importance of spaying in reducing strays. Adoption drives like this are very common all year round to entice more people to adopt rather than buy pets.

Look at these cute puppies put on adoption. I hope they have all found good homes.

Roll a Swiss Roll!

Suddenly felt like baking the other day and thus made use of all available ingredients at Mom's to bake a simple Kaya Roll. As I do not have my favourite swiss roll recipe with me that day, I decided to follow the recipe in one of Mom's recipe books.

Separated the yolks from the whites. I am sure for those who are into baking will know that there must not be any specks of yolks in the egg white as this will affect the texture of the batter and of course the final outcome

The egg whites were whisked together with some sugar and cream of tartar until it turned stiff and form soft peaks

The final batter. I was too busy mixing up ingredients, heating up the oven, and lining the tray with baking sheet that I forgot to take more photos.

I let the cake cool slightly before spreading it with kaya and rolling it up. Mom helped me to cut the hard edges away.

Ta-daa! Kaya Swiss Roll

I made use of the extra batter which was not enough to make a roll, laced it with some cranberry jam and there you go, Sponge Cake with Cranberry Jam!

Mr. Tam was the first to chomp down my Kaya Roll.

I tasted my cake and found it to be a tad too dry. Therefore, I will not share that recipe here, but instead, I'll share the following fool-proof recipe which I've tried so many times already over the past few years. This recipe is a lot better because the cake's texture is springy and it tastes a lot yummier too!

Swiss-Roll Recipe

A- 5 egg yolks

70 ml orange juice

40 g sugar

90 ml corn oil

1/4 vanilla essence

120 g flour + 1/2 tsp of baking powder (sieved)

B- 5 egg whites + 70 g sugar + 1/2 tsp cream of tartar ( Whisk until stiff and soft peaks form)

1.Mix ingredients A in a bowl in the sequence above. Beat well.

2.Add the egg white batter(B) to A and gently fold it in.

3.Line a 23cm x 33 cm tray with baking sheet. Pour the cake mixture into the tray at bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees celcius for 15 minutes.

4. Remove the cake from the tray, cool slightly before inverting it on a baking sheet.

5. Spread Kaya, jam, cream, raisins or diced fruits that you like over the cake.

6. Roll it up slowly.

7. Cut before serving.

Petaling Street Gems

After having brunch with my parents at a porridge stall in Petaling Street, Mom and I decided to walk and shop around that area.

We came upon a few shops that sell gem-like accessories. Most of the necklaces are priced from RM 80 and above.

They also have stuffs like rings, earrings, pendants, bangles etc that are not cheap at all because the sellers claim that these are made of gem stones such as ruby, amethyst, topaz..I'm not familiar with the names though.

I took this picture because I find that it depicts the versatility of this shop lot, being turned from an old run down kopitiam to a Nepalese shop with an array of stones on display. Note the old signboard and the chipped-off wall.

We went next door, which also has the same stuffs on display. The sellers are all from Nepal and they claim that the accessories are all imported from their country. They speak very good English and Malay too!

I do wonder whether these are real gem stones, but they look colourful and shiny, just like candies!

I bought this pair of earring , which has 2 sides, the spiral-like side and the coloured side, for RM 15.

and a pendant for RM 20 to match, also with both sides! These are claimed to be made out of a type of sea shell.

The guy told me that this shell is called Sheba Eye and it purportedly gives good luck to its wearer.

I'm not a supersticious person, but I don't mind having more LUCK!

My half a second!

I appeared in the preview of the show last Friday on astro 304 for yes, half a second!Mr. Moon recorded it on his camera and we shared the clip with liveloveangel, rojakgal and some friends at a barbeque party. They too went crazy after seeing my half a second appearance. It was so funny!

Anyway, this was me with the host Faye during audition. before being told the news two weeks later that I was one of the 13 chosen to participate in the makeover.

I was ecstatic and started to imagine how different I would look after the show.

Well,it turned out, there was no major transformation, just an up-hairdo, a black dress and 'OL' make up.

Unlike the other girls, who looked so much different with their hairdo and their fancy make-up.

The bride was my favourite look among all. Simply because she really looked elegant and gorgeous in the wedding gown! Not to mention,her height and poise! Her hairdo was awesome too!

Plus, he's so soft spoken and friendly! If you are wondering whether Mr. Moon will get jealous of me gushing over Xiao Kai.. the answer is No..cos he himself is amazed by Xiao Kai's physique and good looks!Haha!

Alright! That's the end of my Dream makeover. By the way, the show is entitled My Dreamgirl, which I can't bring myself to mention cos it just sounds weird on me. I hope I won't look silly and 'kekok' when the show airs on astro channel 304 in August! :)

My Dream Makeover (Part II)

I was given the theme Office Lady, or 'OL' simply because I look like one, I reckon. I was not allowed to wear my own attire as the producer wanted me to look significantly different after the makeover. Thus, I was given the white shirt and jeans on the spot. Felt a bit uncomfortable because I really looked drab and dull in it.

My Dream Makeover

I auditioned for a makeover tv show and I was one of the 13 others selected to undergo a makeover by two maestros Tony, and Xiao Kai Lao Shi. Tony is a famous celebrity hair stylist and Xiao Kai is a make-up expert , both made famous from the Taiwanese beauty show, Nu Ren Wo Chui Da.

My foodi-licious weekend

Mr. Moon and I met up with two of our friends , Alex and Yung Yaw for brunch. Both of them had been MIA for a while. The former went 'missing' for a few weeks getting himself occupied with long holidays, MSN chats, sweet Facebook messages with his girlfriend and of course his work at Perodua office. The latter was made to be based in Singapore for a project which had just been completed and thus he's back for good!

We actually detoured from a well known beef noodle place in KL which was closed on a Saturday , landing ourselves at Yut Kee Restaurant upon Yung Yaw's recommendation. It was a corner shop situated along Jalan Dang Wangi, opposite Wilayah Complex.

The place was packed with early risers who came for old school Hainanese feast. I'm a Hainanese myself! So this really felt familiar because my Grandma used to run a coffee shop similar to this at Old Klang Road more than 30 years ago, selling chicken rice and old hainanese kopitiam staple such as charcoal grilled toast with kaya and butter. Unfortunately, after passing the business down to my uncle, the place had to close down as the government decided to utilize the piece of land to build a sewage treatment facility. The rest, like they say.... is history!

Anyway, back to Yut Kee. The restaurant serves a variety of food , from Western pork chops, chicken chops to the more localized food such as toast, half-boiled eggs, noodles and rice. We ordered these as shown in the picture.

Pepper sulked because she was not allowed to join us...hehe :)

I quite like the roasted pork served with apple jam which was shared among us. The meat tasted juicy with a layer of thin and crunchy skin on top. I had the chicken chop all by myself and I would rate it good though it would have tasted even better if the gravy was served separately as to not affect the texture of the fried chicken chop. As for the highly recommended Roti Babi, I 'll have to say that this one is a downer. It looked like tuna sandwich to me and tasted like one too. No comments on the other food that were ordered , Beef noodle (Mr. Moon), Beef & Ginger noodle (Alex) and Belachan Fried Rice (Yung Yaw).
Would I go back again? Yes, I would certainly go back again to savour their other delicacies.

And I just got to know they are closed every Monday.

What about Sunday? I had Japanese with rojakgal, Roy, Shirley, James and Alex at Sushi Zanmai, The Gardens. Pepper can just dream about having sushi for dinner at home, Poor thing.. Alex, what's so funny? Roy and Rojak, Mr. Moon with his hair style ala Korean..:)

It was great catching up with my friends last weekend minus the long queue at Zanmai..Now I'm looking forward to more foodilicious outings...yum yums!

My Sweet Pepper Love...do you still remember yours?

I've never really followed blogs, what more write my own blog, until recently, when rojakgal started her own blog to share her rojaks ( a mix of her daily endeavours). http://rojakgal.blogspot.com . I thought to myself..yeah I can try setting up my own blog too.. so here it is!

Here I am staring at the computer screen trying to figure out what to write in my first ever blog post.

Okay...Perhaps I should introduce the two Loves of my life , Lil' Pepper and Mr. Moon.

Lil' Pepper as the name suggests, is a smaller than usual Miniature Schnauzer. She is 2 years and 6 months old now. More than 2 years ago, Mr.Moon and I, like some young married couples out there decided to get a pet dog as we are both dog lovers. It sure feels good to come home to a warm welcome, a wagging tail , wet nose and thick saliva licks! Don't you think so?:)

After much thought about getting a pet, taking into consideration the limited space we had at our place a.k.a Our Loft, we decided to 'hunt' for a female, miniature schnauzer puppy with 'salt and pepper' coat, simply a grey coat.

First stop: A pet shop opposite The Store in Seri Petaling. There, jumping frantically in the crate, was a female MS puppy of 3 months old..How could this be so coincidental?Anyway, she looked scrawny with her untrimmed look and a little cut on her forehead. She looked way too hyper to Mr. Moon's dismay, who then decided to leave to view a home breeder's puppies in Taman Megah.

Second stop: Taman Megah. This time, Mr. Moon was not convinced with the puppy's coat,which appeared brownish even with the breeder's assurance that the puppy was 'salt and pepper' after clipping. Feeling ever disappointed, we went home. Deep in my mind, I was still thinking about the puppy we saw at the pet shop, but too bad, she was just too hyperactive.

On the very next day, Mr. Moon and I went to the night market near the pet shop. We decided to walk into the pet shop just to check out the puppy again. This time, the puppy seemed obedient and well-behaved. The little tail of hers wagged and wagged but she remained very composed, unlike yesterday. Maybe she just woke up from a deep sleep? My heart melted right away ..AGAIN!!

This time. Mr.Moon was doubtful no more! He made up his mind right away and even named her 'Pepper' on the spot. I was ecstatic and happily cuddled Pepper. "Bye Bye Pet Shop. Hello to your new home, Pepper!"I softly whispered to her , as we were leaving the pet shop.

Fast forward to present...

2 years and 3 months after that fateful day, I am still very much 'in love' with my Lil' Pepper who loves to take naps, snores, sleeps on my bed, nibbles my used cottons /tissue, checks out every dustbin in the house, destroys Mr. Moon's undies....ooooppsss!
